Rump Roast

With all the rigamarole that I have had to deal with this pregnancy, I have overall been very blessed.  Yes I have had 50+ doctor’s appointments.  Yes I go to the bathroom 4 times every night.  Yes my legs resemble a leopard from shots twice a day.  Oh and Yes I have the dreaded stretch marks on my belly.  But that has really been the worst of it.  And that I have taken like a champ with only minimal tears.

Until last night.

I was laying on the bed when Tim noticed some distinct discoloration on my backside.  Don’t get excited, nothing freaky and good was going on.  I was just laying there trying to wait out a contraction and sharp pain in my hind parts.  I asked him what he meant and he said the back of my legs were very dark.

Of course I freaked out and had him bring me a mirror.  After a quick survey of the back of my legs I burst into tears.  The back of my legs are, like, really dark!  Noticeably so.  Of course I started wailing and Tim was consoling me and telling me it wasn’t a big deal.  And of course I had to have him inspect all of my hind parts which led to the conclusion that my booty doesn’t look nearly as good as it used to.

I’ve heard of melasma, which is a darkening of the face of pregnant women, but I’ve never heard of it being on the hind parts.  This morning I showed it to my OB and she said she has seen it before.  She said it’s just how the melanin in the skin reacts for some pregnant women.  She didn’t think it was a big deal.

So I’m kinda bummed and worried that this will put a damper on my rump shakin plans for the summer.  Oh wait, this isn’t 1992 is it?  Wrong blog post.

Did you have any weird darkening of the skin during your pregnancy.

No darkening but I did start losing hair at my edges a few months after delivery. It happened with my daughter and came back while preggers with my son. Now Still hoping it will return.

Sure did. The back of my legs got dark, as you’ve described. I also had darkening of my neck and slightly on my face. Everything cleared up not long after I had my son, and I’m sure yours will too.

happens to most women of color according to my Indian and Hispanic friends.

My neck and stomach were black, black, black. They are returning, but now my hair s falling out again. Especially at the temple. It fell out with baby 1, grew back and is now falling out again. sigh
