50SOG

When I first heard about the book “50 Shades of Grey” I scoffed.  A lady does not read such rubbish!

Okay, not really.  And let’s be real, Babs is no lady!  Truth is, I didn’t really have an interest in reading it because I believe one should have a proper outlet when partaking in such literature.  Like a outhouse in the middle of the woods, Babs does not have an outlet.

Then Disco Diva mentioned her book club was reading it and I thought it might be fun to read.  I read the first book and then I read the second.  Last week I was with a group of women and the subject of the book came up.  One of the women said she thought it was horrible and found no *ahem* stimulation from reading it.  I call bullsh!t.  If she isn’t lying then I feel mighty sorry for her husband.

After that discussion, I was super excited to go to book club to have an open dialogue about the book.  Then my daddy decided to come to town and I had to miss book club.  I’m pretty sure me dipping out to go talk about erotica would have made for a very akward weekend.  Still, I want to talk about the book!

So that’s where you come in.  Time to dish, you naughty readers!  Have you read 50SOG?  What did you think about the characters, story line, BDSM, etc.  What did or didn’t you like?  Would you like to see this made into a movie?  Who would make a good Christian Grey?

What ever you want to talk about, let’s do it!

I haven’t read yet, but I bought it off Amazon with some gift cards I had. It should be delivered by tomorrow! I’m very interested to read it since everyone’s been buzzing about it. Hubby & I are planning to read it together because I knew, with the things I’d heard, that I’d prefer to have that ‘outlet’ as well. 🙂 I’ve heard rumors of Ryan Gosling playing Christian – yummy! I don’t know if that’s a fact or not, so don’t quote me, but… Sounds like a good choice to me!

I am reading the first. Whoa……I agree with you. If you don’t feel anything when reading there’s probably a problem. I am only about half way through but it’s to the point where I don’t want to put it down, which I love. So far I’m a little put off by the contract and all of it’s demands. I’m curious to see where this goes. BTW- did you ever read Orange, Mint & Honey yet?

  3. AmyG says:

Yay yay yay!!!!!!! My favorite topic :):):): I read all three back to back…I thought the writing was horrid and yet I could not put them down. Hubby had a great couple of weeks :):). I have no idea how the hell they are going to turn it into a movie…what would it be rated!?!?!?! I am worried of they don’t pick the right actors to match what i have in my head, I will be annoyed…Ryan gosling does not do it for me :(:(

I like Ryan Gosling but I think Ryan Reynolds is far hotter & ‘manlier’ than Gosling. I agree with your movie comments though. I mean, movies with a quick passing shot of nekkid naughty parts get the highest rating even if there’s not a lot of mattress dancing going on – how in the heck are they going to portray all that ‘extra’ business without an X rating??

We talked about the movie during book club and we know they are going to want an R…which will be boring! We think it would be a better series on HBO where they can really portray everything! We had a person that was adamant that Christian Bale should play Christian…but most thought he will be too old since Grey was 27/28. We thought Christian could not be ready to have as much as he was…especially back to back…even with the knowledge that he was 27. One person was like…how does he ALWAYS have a condom? We also thought Ana was too naive to be a college and never even kissed a boy…especially if she was so pretty. We could understand virgin…but no kiss? Most were grossed by the Tampon shower scene.

All I can say with them theme is that although I am not into BDSM, in the words of the incompable Riri…:
“‘Cause I may be bad, but I’m perfectly good at it
Sex in the air, I don’t care, I love the smell of it
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But chains and whips excite me”

Christian was a bit much for me but I can see how reading can make for some pretty interesting steamy nices…especially if your relationship has stalled a bit.

I thought the writing was horrible! I know she isn’t an author…but I wondered how far she went in school! Some things came across as very “young”.

I read all 3 and overall enjoyed it …but Ana was Getting on my nerves with her protest and defiance. It was like grow up, Ana! One person was like…”just f*** already!

I encourage everyone to get a group of women and discuss! Great bonding 🙂

I’m 85% (according to my kindle) through the first book. I hadn’t planned on reading it since I also heard the writing was horrible and nothing irritates me more than bad writing, but my book club also decided to read it and find out about the hype. If chick didn’t get stimulated, she needs to have her libido checked. I’m pretty sure I”ll finish the rest of the first book today and move on to the second. And I agree with Disco Diva’s book club about the tampon scene. When I read that last night I was a little grossed out. That’s a bit much. Always having a condom doesn’t really surprise me since he seems to be the type to think about everything and he makes it clear that everything about Ana turns him on so he wants to be prepared at any moment.

  6. Petite Pearl says:

I’m a little more than half way through the first book. I, like many others, was guilted into reading it because everyone is talking about it!! It’s a sizzler even though the writing is bad. I agree Ana seems too naive for a college student.

  7. The writing is HORRIBLE. I mean, I feel like a young girl wrote it.

The naughty bits were good, but the overall story kinda took away from that for me. I admit I read the second book because I wanted to see more character development and understand why this dude was so fugged up.

Ana really got on my nerves. She was way too naive to be fresh out of college. And way too skilled to be a virgin.

    • discodiva73 says:

Yes…no one thought it believeable that she swallowed the first time she gave him a BJ. That is just ludicrous.

      • creolefleur says:

Totally not believable! And the way it’s described that she moves her hips against him, and enticing him, you just don’t know that automatically. You grow into that kind of grinding. I know someone similar to Christian and that’s probably what’s really grabbing my attention. I see alot of parallels. When he said his mother was a crackhead, that answered it all for me particularly since I’ve been through all these classes to adopt. They tell you how different things affect children emotionally and his not wanting to be touched was explained immediately for me after he revealed that.

      • Petite Pearl says:

ITA – I said the same thing. Ain’t no way she wouldn’t have choked or vomited.

  8. 1969 says:

Henry Cavill for Christian Grey hands down. Google him ladies. He was in the Tudors, Immortals and is the new Superman.

The writing is terrible. The inner goddess dancing every few pages was annoying but I was loving the character of Christian Grey. He makes reading the books worthwhile.

  9. Rose's Daughter says:

LOVED these books! And if chick didn’t feel anything reading these books, something is wrong with her.
The writing was horrible! Lol but the story line / subject matter kept me coming back.
I have no clue who should play Christian . Maybe an unknown? And what on earth would they rate it???

  10. Okay, so do you ladies think I should bother reading the third book and, more importantly, does anyone have it on Nook and want to e-lend it to me???

  11. InnerDiva says:

I read them to see what the hype was after the news described the series as “mommy porn.” I just started book 3, and the story gets more interesting. The writing is still at an 8th grade level, but I really want to see how the story ends. Is it just me, or did it seem like the “relationship” moved super fast? And that her roommate was gone like, forever? I don’t buy Ana’s naivete. And if Christian is only 26/27, how has he had that many subs already? When did he start?

  12. K says:

I just finished the third book and thought it was a good ending to the story in the first two. I recommend reading. I have it in old school paper form and would be willing to send it to you, if you want it.

As for the inner goddess whatnot, the swallowing, and Christian Bale as the lead–I SO agree with everyone else.

  13. Nellie says:

I’ve read all three and I believe the writing was extremely subpar but the plot…was sort of gripping…some of the issues and the way Christian acted as a result of his childhood was based in truth. I mean sure the sex scenes were fun but after a while…meh…To be honest I enjoyed the final chapter of the third book the very most.

  14. trish says:

I read all three in less than a week. That Christian and Ana….they pull you in and I couldn’t put the books down. Unfortunately, I am one of the closet readers who hasn’t admitted to her friends that she has read the series.

  15. dmac1990 says:

I’ve got the first two in pdf because of all of the hype surrounding them but I haven’t started reading any of them. I don’t mind erotica at all but the thought of behind shenanigans brings to mind getting cleaned out for childbirth.
