Transition Tuesday

It started with one youtube video.  And then another.  And then another.  And then another.  After several hours of watching videos on youtube I was convinced.  I could be great!  My HAIR could be great if I just did the big chop!

I’ve kinda been hating my hair the last few weeks.  Because of the amount of new growth over the last 7 months, it has been increasingly more difficult to manage.  While I did have a solid routine, I felt that my hair only looked truly good on day one of my twist out.  Day two looked shabby and day three looked the shabbiest.  I don’t have the time, energy or patience to freshly wash and twist my hair every single day, so I had to make a change.

And so on Friday morning, I loaded my mom up in the car and drove to a hair salon on the other side of town.  I didn’t tell her where we were going, just that we had something to do for me.  I admit I started to get the nervous stomach as we were driving and even started to wonder if I was making the right decision.  As we pulled into the parking lot I turned to her and told her I was cutting off all my hair.  She gave me a big smile and said “alright!”  I was immediately put at ease and knew I was making the right decision.

The ladies at Simia’s Salon in Hapeville were great.  They made me feel very welcome, answered any question I had and had no problem with my bringing my own hair care products.  Of course I didn’t forget my Original Moxie products!

As Shawntia sat me down in the chair, I was prepared for a discussion and some sort of build up the the first snip.  But no happs.  As soon as I sat down she commenced to cutting.  And just like that my hair was gone.  On the floor.  And I didn’t even cry.

After cutting my hair, she took me to the back to wash and condition it.  She used my Original Moxie Get Clean shampoo and Intense Quench conditioner.  After reading the description on the bottles, she seemed pleased with the idea of using them.

After some time at the sink it was back to the chair where she cut my hair some more!  I guess after washing my hair she was able to further identify those pesky straight ends.  She finished up the cut and then it was time to style.  I handed her the bottle of Shape Shifter to apply.  She used a spray bottle to re-wet my hair and applied the product.  She combed it, scrunched it, put on my headband and voila! I was done.  My new hair is THAT easy!

I admit my biggest concern was how I would look with a TWA (teeny weeny afro) but I actually think I look pretty good.  My TWA isn’t at all teeny.  That means my hair really did some growing during this last seven months.  On top of that, my hair already has so much curl.  After applying the Shape Shifter, my hair immediately began to curl into perfect little coils.  I can’t keep my hands out of my hair.

Now that I have cut off the relaxed ends, I think I’ll have several challenges in this next phase of my transition:

1) learning how to get different “looks” out of my newly shortened hair

2) learning what works best for keeping it conditioned and moisturized

3) getting growth so I can do other styles such has twist outs and whatnot

4) being truly confident when I step out in public

I am so happy I did the “big chop”.  I can’t believe how comfortable I am with this new look.  I’m ready whatever this summer has in store for me!

And it is going to be next to impossible to keep your hands out of your head. I wore twists (with hair added in) for several years until I felt ready to wear my hair. There were about two months in between before I locked my hair. I could not stop touching my afro puff. I loved the way it felt! I’m the same with my locs.

I remember one time you saying something to the effect that you couldn’t live without the creamy crack. Look at you now!

I’m gonna be honest and say I don’t always like the BC look on everyone but I think this looks absolutely stunning on you!!!! I really love it.

  40. Shea says:

I’ll say it again, I think you look marvelous. It suits you very much. Once you get your products and routine down, you’ll be good to go. No more having to run from the rain, you’ll be free to ride with the windows down, you can sweat out your hair and it will be no big deal, no more spending hours in the salon, etc. All this plus you’ll be your daughter’s first positive role model for natural hair. And that trumps all in my book.

  41. naturallyk says:

Looks great! For some reason Regan looks even more like you know that you can really see your face! So nice!

and the best part of a twa now that its summer?? WASH & GO or even spritz & go..

Nice curl pattern too.. WTG on making this decision when YOU were ready!

WOW! I love it, Babs! You look so pretty with your new look! First you fill your gap, now you have a new “do”. You are doing the heck out of YOU! 😉

I’ve been seriously playing with wearing my hair in its natural state during these hot-a$$ed summer months (I’m in Birmingham). I’ve been natural for over a year now and my stylist got rid of the last remnants of relaxed hair in early April. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that like your hair my hair curls too! So I was going to experiment with not blowing out my hair and wearing it curly when I go to Memphis for the 4th of July weekend to see how I liked it. I.AM.SCARED!</b? I'm afraid of how my face will look with a TWA…

But you have inspired me to not be a punk! I'm going to do it!

    Thanks, Babsie!
